OVERVIEW

Despite a decrease in the demand for paper writing and printing materials, there is an increasing demand for alternate paper-based products for areas of use such as: personal hygiene, food packaging products, corrugated packaging materials, paper-based medicinal materials, diagnostic devices, and specialty papers used in face masks. It is hence essential to improve the properties of paper products, in order to meet the functional needs associated with the diversified demand.


ROLE  OF  FILLERS

The use of functional nanoadditives as fillers and/or coating pigments is the contemporary approach in neutral/alkaline thin paper manufacturing technology.

Fillers are the second most important component of paper. The play an essential role in improving paper functionality and end-use properties such as dimensional stability, smoothness, increased opacity, brightness, enhance water penetration control, while increasing the wet and dry strength of the paper. and ink absorption.

However, the use of fillers at high loading levels (20%) decreases paper strength and sizing efficiency as well as poor filler retention and wire abrasion. 

WHY  NANOFILLERS ?

The use of  speciality nanofillers such as  ultrafine atomically-engineered nanoparticles helps enhance the mechanical, optical, electrical, heat resistance and radiation resistance of paper, as a result of the proper dispersion of the nanofillers in the matrix properties of paper - at low doses. The dosage used is determined by the surface area of the nanofiller particles, and the nanofiller effectiveness is enhanced as the surface area increases. This high surface area improves the binding of the nanofiller particles to the fibre surface, to improve particle retention.

The employment of atomically-engineered nanofiller particles in the paper making process can substantially reduce the consumption of expensive fibre raw material by over 40% and save energy. A homogeneous distribution of nanofiller particles for example, is favourable for the efficient development and effective improvement of nanofiller-containing paper sheets.
