FUNCTIONAL  ENHANCEMENT  OF  DENTAL  RESINS,  CROWNS  &  IMPLANTS

OVERVIEW

Titanium (Ti), its related alloys and other contemporary materials used by the dental implant industry are perceived to offer reasonable biocompatibility, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, which renders them suitable for dental implants.

However, the long-term operation of dental implants is challenged by implant-related infections, hardness and inadequate osseointegration.

In circumstances involving peri-implantitis, although conventional therapy has the ability to decrease the population of several periodontal pathogens, microbiological parameters sometimes tend to revert to pretreatment values, showing elevated counts for several target microorganisms roughly 30 days after treatment. Irrespective of treatment effectiveness, prevention of implant failure by enhancing its performance with multifunctional antipathogenic quantum materials is of crucial importance. The coating of titanium and other forms of implants with antimicrobial nanomaterials should effectuate the prevention of infection and peri-implantitis and as a result, increase the succes rate of implants.

Avoiding implant failure is one of the fundamental reasons for surface modification of a dental implant because early bacterial colonisation can occur within minutes after implantation by microorganisms associated with periodontitis.

Nanotechnology, enables the development of surface modifications that can mitigate these issues. These may be either in the form of:

NANOARC Biomimetics uses nano-engineering to design and develop atomically-architectured functional and bio-compatible nanomaterials for topographical modifications and surface coatings of dental implants. Below is a layout of our offering to help dental implant manufacturers achieve essential improvement goals in their implants.

THE  CHALLENGE

Residual bacteria create severe secondary problems for patients after root canal treatment and dental implant installations. Dental resins used for restorative treatment harbour more dental plaque than the enamel, and alternate systems adopted for similar purposes. Dental resins need to provide protection to filled tooth cavities, beyond the the dentist visit. Dental implants serve an aesthetic purpose but could be made better by offering local protection within the implanted area, so as to minimize the risk of infections and prevent a weakening of the root dentin.

Despite a 90-95% success rate with dental implants, complications can occur leading to implant failure. In particularly peri-implantitis. This happens when bacteria accumulate on the implant surface, causing local inflammation, bone degradation and removal of the infected implant.

Although systemic antibiotics are often used to reduce the risk of peri-implantitis, high doses can increase the risk of unwanted side effects. The improper use of these drugs has led to the rise of drug-resistant bacteria, and alternative ways to prevent such complications are necessary.

We propose the use of antimicrobial materials, as additives within dental resins and implants. Most antimicrobial materials however, require photoactivation. This means they will not perform the desired functionality, within the dark operational conditions of the buccal cavity.

WHY NANOTECHNOLOGY ?

Nanotechnology makes exclusive provision of a specific category of nanomaterials that can accomplish such as tasks - Quantum materials also known as quantum-confined materials. When Quantum Materials are designed to be of specific dimension and chemical composition, they deliver antimicrobial activity under the predominantly dark operational conditions within the mouth. They are hence the most efficient remedy necessary, to enhance dental resin and implant performance.

OUR STRATEGY

NANOARC offers quantum-confined, antimicrobial and biocompatible, atomically-architectured materials of non-toxic composition, for integration within dental resin and implant composite systems. The quantum materials are designed to mitigate unpleasant infections post root canal treatment, minimize the need for heavy consumption of antibiotics and enable or more gentle recovery of the patient, while combating issues related with drug-resistant bacteria.

The quantum material, is fine enough to enter the root canal, where dental tools may not necessarily extend. Also, it has a mohs hardness similar to that of a natural tooth, is designated to mechanically reinforce the root dentin and prohibit fracture, after removal of tooth material. It will also increase the service duration of resin composite restorations, while preventing erosion of teeth located on the opposite side of the implant or resin-filled tooth. We offer high performance FDA approved or Generally Recognised As Safe (GRAS) materials. The higher their surface area of the quantum material, the more augmented its performance and the lower the dose necessary for effective results.

Our quantum materials are designed to be mechanically more compatible with teeth and mitigate unpleasant infections. This creates a scenarion wherein there is a minimized the need for heavy antibiotic consumption and mitigating issues related with growing concerns surrounding drug-resistant bacteria.

Essentially, nature has made provision for health issues to be circumvented. We have simply harnessed these lessons from nature, and incorporate within our nanomaterial design processes, to help manufacturers seamlessly upgrade their existing systems.

HOW TO USE QUANT DENT

I. Mix the nanopowder(s) at the desired dose(s) with your resin and/or implant composite material and proceed as usual

II. As a coating on the implant surface for in the finishing phase

III. Use as both an integral part of the implant composite in addition to a coating. This approach provides additional protection if the coating on the implant scratches or wears off.
